Translating Theme Texts (Sale, Save, Select option …)
Overview
Every text the Momentum Theme renders on the storefront — badges like "Sale" and "Save 50%", the "Select option" placeholder in variant dropdowns, "Add to cart", stock messages — comes from the theme's locale files. Nothing customer-facing is hardcoded, so you can translate or reword everything without touching code.
Where the texts live
- The theme ships with English (
en.default.json) and German (de.jsoninformal "Du",de-SIE.jsonformal "Sie"). - Section and block texts you type yourself (headings, USP lines, button labels in settings) are your content and stay as you wrote them — locale files only cover the theme's built-in strings.
How to change a text
- In your Shopify Admin go to Online Store > Themes > ⋯ (three dots) > Edit default theme content (the language editor).
- Search for the text you see on the storefront (e.g. "Sale") or for the key name (e.g.
save). - Enter your wording and save — the storefront updates immediately.
Useful keys for price badges
| Key | Used for | English default | German default |
|---|---|---|---|
products.product.on_sale | "Sale" badge on gallery/cards | Sale | Sale |
products.product.save | Discount badge & price pill ("Save 50%") | Save | "-" (renders as "- 50%") |
products.product.select_option | Variant dropdown placeholder | Select option | Option wählen |
products.product.low_stock | Low stock badge | Low stock | Fast ausverkauft |
products.product.sold_out | Sold out badge & button | Sold out | Ausverkauft |
Useful keys for the cart
| Key | Used for | English default | German default |
|---|---|---|---|
sections.cart.empty | Empty cart drawer and cart page | Your cart is empty | Dein Warenkorb ist leer |
sections.cart.checkout | Checkout button | Checkout | Zur Kasse |
sections.cart.subtotal | Subtotal line | Subtotal | Zwischensumme |
products.product.add_to_cart | Add to cart button | Add to cart | In den Warenkorb |
Note on the empty cart message (fixed August 2026): up to Momentum 1.0.0 the drawer showed the English wording once you removed the last item, even with a translated locale file — the script read the text out of the page instead of the locale, and the element it read from had been replaced while items were rendered. If you see an English "Your cart is empty" on an older version, that is why; the translation itself was never missing.
Tip: In German, setting save to "Spare" renders "Spare 50%"; keeping "-" renders the compact "- 50%" badge style. Both are valid — pick one and it applies everywhere (gallery badge, price pill, product cards, pack options) consistently.
