Mockup in the Feed, Model Shot on the Product Page
A common print-on-demand problem: the image that sells best in a collection grid or a Facebook feed is rarely the one you want people to land on inside the product.
The flat mockup — shirt on a table, a few props around it — shows the design and nothing else. That is exactly right while someone is scrolling past twenty products. But once they are on the product page, they want to see the shirt worn.
The setting Open on the image after the featured one solves this without touching a single image assignment.
Find it in Product Section → Media Gallery block.
What it does
The gallery normally opens on the featured image — or, if the selected variant has its own image, on that one. With the setting on, it opens on the image that comes directly after it in your product's media order.
It works the same way on page load and on every variant change.
Your image order stays exactly as you set it. Only the slide the gallery opens on changes. The mockup keeps its place as image one, in the main gallery and in the thumbnails — customers can swipe or click back to it like any other image.
Your feeds are not affected
This is the part worth being clear about, because it is the reason the setting is safe:
| Where | What it uses |
|---|---|
| Google Shopping, Meta catalog | The product and variant images sent through the sales channel, straight from your product data |
| Link previews when someone shares the page | Shopify's own page image — the featured image, or the variant image on a variant URL |
| Collection cards, search results | The featured image, or the variant image on swatch hover |
| Product page gallery | This setting |
Only the last row is what you are changing. So go ahead and set the flat mockup as the featured image, and as the image of every variant — feeds, previews and collection cards will use it, and the product page still opens on the next one.
How to set your images up
Order the media per variant, mockup first:
1. Grey – flat mockup ← featured image, variant image for grey
2. Grey – worn, front ← what the product page opens on
3. Grey – detail of print
4. Blue – flat mockup ← variant image for blue
5. Blue – worn, front ← what a switch to blue opens on
6. Blue – detail of printThe rule is simply "one further along", so the image right after each mockup is the one that gets shown. Keep that order and it works for every colour.
Edge cases
- Only one image — nothing changes, there is nothing to move on to.
- The mockup is the last image — nothing changes either, the gallery opens normally rather than jumping nowhere.
- No variant images assigned — the setting applies to the product's first image, which is the same idea for products without colours.
Stacked layout
The setting works here too, it just has to work differently. Stacked shows every image below one another at once, so there is no slide to move a cursor to — instead the image is placed first, in the large slot at the top. The mockup keeps its place further down the column.
That is also how stacked has always handled a variant change: it physically moves the matching image to the front. So with the setting on, a colour switch puts that colour's model shot at the top and the rest of the column follows in your original order.
When to leave it off
If your first image is already the strongest one for the product page — a good lifestyle shot, a packshot with detail — leave it off. The setting exists for the case where the catalog image and the product-page image genuinely want to be two different things.
