Section Buttons: Add to Cart & Go to Checkout
Added in Momentum 1.1.0 (October 2026).
Most buttons in Momentum sections no longer have to be a plain link. With the Button type setting, a button can put a product straight into the cart and, if you want, send the customer directly to checkout. One click from a hero banner, a landing page or an advertorial to the checkout, without the detour over the product page.
This is especially useful for:
- Landing pages and funnels for a single product (ads traffic, launches, pre-orders)
- Advertorials where the reader should buy at the end of the article
- Pricing tables and bundles where each column is one product
- Blog articles with a product banner at the end or in the sidebar
The Settings
Every button that supports it shows the same three settings directly below its button text:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Button type | Custom link (default) or Add to cart |
| Button link | Only visible with Custom link. The page, product, collection or URL the button opens. In some sections this field is called Link, Button url or Custom url for button. |
| Choose product for adding to cart | The product that is added when the button is clicked. Only used when Button type is Add to cart. |
| Go directly to checkout | Only visible with Add to cart. On (default): the customer lands in checkout after the product is added. Off: the customer lands on the cart page. |
Setting Up an Add-to-Cart Button
- In the theme editor, click the section (or the block, see the list below) that contains the button.
- Enter your Button text, e.g. "Buy now" or "Get yours today".
- Set Button type to Add to cart.
- Under Choose product for adding to cart, pick the product.
- Decide on Go directly to checkout:
- On for one-product funnels and advertorials: shortest path to purchase.
- Off if customers should see the cart first, e.g. to add more items or see your cart upsells.
- Click Save.
How It Works
The button builds a normal Shopify cart link:
- It adds one unit of the product to the cart.
- It uses the product's first available variant (or its first variant if none is available). If your product has several variants (sizes, colors), the customer cannot choose one with this button. For multi-variant products, link to the product page with Custom link instead, or create a separate product for the variant you want to sell.
- With Go directly to checkout on, Shopify redirects to checkout right after adding the product. Items already in the cart stay there.
- If no product is selected, the button has no link and does nothing when clicked. Always pick a product after switching to Add to cart.
Because the button is a plain link, it also works without JavaScript and does not open the cart drawer. The customer goes straight to the cart page or checkout.

Sections with two buttons (primary and secondary) have an independent Button type for each one. A common funnel setup: primary button "Buy now" with Add to cart and Go directly to checkout, secondary button "Learn more" as Custom link to the product page.
Existing Buttons After the Update
All existing buttons keep Custom link as their button type, so their links work exactly as before. Nothing changes until you switch a button to Add to cart yourself.
Tips
- Use Add to cart only for products with a single variant, or where the first variant is the one you want to sell.
- Test the button in the live preview before you send ad traffic to the page: click it once and check that the right product lands in the cart.
- Discount codes still work: customers can enter them in checkout as usual.
- If a product is sold out, Shopify shows its own message on the cart page. Check your funnel pages whenever stock runs low.
